Steps are being taken to formalize institutional data governance at the University of Iowa, given growing interest in and demand for institutional data, the complexity of the campus data environment, the desire for aggregating data across domains, and the changing compliance and privacy landscape.

An Institutional Data Governance Team is working on a data-governance framework that addresses data ownership, access and awareness, security, quality and integrity, and roles, policies, and processes.

The project aims to advance the university data culture, increase literacy and awareness, support informed decisions, ensure data stewardship, unify data across the university, develop and review policies, prioritize data and data governance projects, and resolve data and governance issues. The Institutional Data Governance Team is also working to add structure to data-stewardship roles.
