The OneIT Data Center and Server consolidation project has booked their 27th server room decommission, 285 Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratory (IATL) for the Physics and Astronomy department.
The server room housed a small high performance computing cluster running in-depth calculations and data analysts for a research lab, this research has been fully virtualized and migrated to the Argon Cluster. This room will be transformed into a FM utility and storage closet once the special power, HVAC, networking and supporting equipment is removed.
The OneIT DC SC team is working in parallel on all phases of the project (migrating, virtualizing, retiring machines, and decommissioning) in multiple server rooms to reach our goals.
Metrics to date:
- 84.38% (26 of 32 rooms decommissioned)
- 7,260 sq. ft. of floor space has been reclaimed by departments in total
- 547 servers have been consolidated in total
- 388 servers reduced, virtualized or retired
- 159 server migrated to a central data center
***Note: These statistics are only updated after a room is fully booked for decommissioning, the FM remodeling plan is signed by all parties, and all IT server equipment is removed, making the total number of hours saved and servers decommissioned to be significantly higher.
