Application Portfolio Management, Year in Review 2016
Applications Inventoried & Refactored
- The team worked with campus IT leaders to inventory software applications purchased and developed at the UI.
- The new application portfolio allowed IT leadership to identify duplicate applications and opportunities for application refactoring or consolidation.
Student Record System Enhancements Simplify Tasks for Students and Advisors
New features in the student record system make scheduling appointments and sharing information much more convenient for University of Iowa students and their advisors.
In addition to putting key tasks in a single, easy-to-access site, the new features eliminate the need for departments to have distinct systems. So far, the advising notes feature has combined six systems and the scheduler has merged four.
New Online Course Evaluation Tool Saves Departments Time, Money
ACE (Assessing the Classroom Environment) Online allows students to complete the evaluations at a time and place that works for them—on a mobile device in class, at home, or in a computer lab. Faculty will benefit from easy, online access to the data from their current and future course evaluations. The new tool reduces paper waste and requires far less staff time to administer. It is forecast to save $350,000 per year.
Project Approaches Completion
- The team has completed a majority of its project work but still has a few tasks to complete, including the refactoring of four remaining applications.
- They are working with the Project Management Office and Governance project teams to identify a long-term custodian for the app portfolio.
